Cavalry Stables
121

Circa 1906

Fort ApacheHistory: The original stables which stood in this approximate location were built running north and south. After they burned (circa 1906) four stables were built in a row, from north to south, each building running in an east-west direction. Only one of the four stable continues to stand. The other three burned, the most recent on September 26, 1988.

The remaining stable was extensively remodeled circa 1923 to serve as a dairy barn for the use of the Theodore Roosevelt School. One fascinating feature remaining in the building is that each stall is still labeled with the name of the last soldier responsible for the stall and the name of his horse.
