| History of the Fire. |
6-18-02 Two small fires began north of
Cibicue Arizona, approximately 20 miles southwest of Show Low. The first is
spotted and doused, The second fire had a mind of it's own and continued to
burn and became the Rodeo Fire at this time the fire had burned approx. 200
acres, Cause human. 6-18-02 Gov. Jane Hull has announced a state of emergency. 6-19-02 By mid morning the fire is rageing and crews are pulled off of the front lines for their own safty ! Reports put the fire at over 10,000 plus acres consumed by 5:00 PM. 8 miles wide with flame lengths in excess of 400 foot. 5,000 people leave as the Residence of Linden - Pinedale and Clay Springs are ordered to evacuate ! at this time the fire is consuming 5,000 acres per hour ! 6-20-02 At 6:00 AM command of the fire is turned over to Larry Humphrey's type 1 incident management team, the Rodeo Fire grew to 30,000 acres by mid-morning. At 6:55 the Chediski Fire was set and quickly grew to 2,000 + acres. Human caused, The fire was located 15 miles northwest of Cibecue, AZ. The residents of Heber - Overgaard and Aripine have been ordered to evacuate ! 16 homes Lost in Pinedale. The two fires are now 15 miles apart. The Rodeo Fire grew to over 85,000 acres by the end of the day and is a case of arson ! 6-21-02 The strong winds continue and by mid-day the Rodeo Fire had consumed 150,000 acres, the Chediski Fire had burned 16,000 and was headed tward Overgaard, 8,000 people are evacuated from the area, and there speculation that the two fires will merge into one large fire ! 6-22-02 A last ditch effort is made to stop the fires from entering the Show Low area, the fires continue and the evacuation of 20,000 residence in the area begins, in the Timberland Acres subdivision 98 homes are burned, as the day continues the fires burn 235,000 acres, with 260 structures lost. It is anticipated that the Chediski and Rodeo Fires will burn together. Increased winds and a windshift to the southwest during yesterday afternoon resulted in active fire behavior and upslope wind-driven fire behavior. Residence of Forest Lakes have been ordered to evacuate ! 6-23-02 The Rodeo and Chediski fires have burned together into one big monster, National Forest Supervisor John Bedell orders the closure of 3 million acres of forest ! firefighting resources have saved a number of residences. By noon 300,000 acres had burned. Residence of Pinetop-Lakeside where ordered to evacuate ! some homes where lost in Overgaard. 6-24-02 The two fires had merged into one 321,000 acres, more homes where lost in Timberland Acres and Clay Springs areas. 4 type 1 Teams arrived , their is hope that the lines may hold to keep the fire outside of Show Low, One fire fighter was injured. Residence in the area learn that President Bush will visit the next day. 6-25-02 The fire creeps to within one quarter mile of Show Low City Limits and has grown to 375,000 acres, fighting the fire at the time where 2,700 fire fighters, some crews where working hard to protect structures in and around the Linden area... 6-25-02 President Bush speaks with evacuees in Springerville - Eagar, Declares Navajo and Apache counties National Disaster. 6-26-02 Some containment at last, the fire had grown to 409,000 acres. the fire fighters 3,000+, now have the fire five percent contained, with the fire being held west of U.S. 60. The fireline inserted on the eastern flank is holding, preventing fire from moving into Show Low and communities to the east. $36,000.00 reward offered for information leading to arrest and conviction of the person who started the Rodeo Fire ! 6-27-02 By the end of the day the fire has burned 417,000 acres. The fire fighters count is 3,847. There are 32,000 people in ten towns that had been evacuated. The Fire was reported at 10% contained. No reports of fire in Show Low or Lakeside. Residents of Overgaard claim that their community was "sacrificed" to save Show Low. Forest Lakes was still in danger at that time. 6-28-02 423 homes had been destroyed. With 2,123 + Homes Saved ! The Rodeo/Cheski Fire had Grown to 437,000 acres. with 27% Containment. Navajo County officials escort residents through the Timberland Acres, Pinedale and Clay Springs areas. U.S. Senator Jon Kyl appears in Show Low and calls for better forest policies. 6-29-02 The fire had Grown to 455,000 acres. Burnout operations, along with structural protection, continued along the western and northwestern portion. Additional efforts where made to contain those areas that crossed Highway 260. The threat to Forest Lakes area was still high. A backing fire was working its way southward near Road 512 and community of Cibecue. 6-30-02 U.S. Attorney Paul Charlton announces that a BIA contracted firefighter Leonard Gregg, 29, of Cibecue had been arrested on two charges of setting fire to timber ! At the time the fire had consumed 464,000 acres with 45% containment and they where holding the line near Forest Lakes. 7-01-02 423 homes have been destroyed so far. The Rodeo/Cheski Fire has Grown to 463,830 acres. The Fire is reported as 45% contained. Burnout operations along the west perimeter conducted on the evening of 6/29 have been able to keep the fire from spreading beyond the established containment line. 7-3-02 Heber-Overgaard residents return home. |

| July 4th 2002... The Totals ! The fire has cost $43 million to control and will cost an estimated $43 million to repair the enironmental damage. President Bush pledged $20 million to help defray firefighting costs. An estimated $26 million in property damage with 491 structures destroyed, with unknown millions in timber and tourism ! No one was killed or seriously injured ! ! ! |
