11-06-05 : Pinetop, Lakeside, and Show Low Fire Department are now issuing Burn Permits.
Before you start up a fire in your fireplace, make sure to get your chimney cleaned before you light up.
This should conclude the fire season reports for this year, please be cautious with your fires this winter !
10-14-05 : HURRICANE KATRINA/RITA SUPPORT Under the nation's Federal Response Plan, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) is allowed to task federal departments and agencies to perform disaster-related missions. Resources are grouped into 12 Emergency Support Functions (ESF) to facilitate providing the federal assistance that states are most likely to need. Each ESF is headed by a primary agency. The ESFs include transportation, communications, public works, firefighting, information and planning, mass care, resource support, health/medical, urban search and rescue, hazardous materials, food service, and energy. The Forest Service is the lead agency for "ESF-4, Firefighting." Under the Incident Command System, the Forest Service is joined by the other federal and state fire management agencies in offering emergency relief support to the Southeast Area. Over the past month, the Southwest Area has sent almost 900 individuals to the Southeast to aid in Hurricane Katrina and Rita support. Currently, about 450 persons from the Southwest are still on assignment there. Dan Oltrogge's Southwest Area Type I Incident Management Team has been assigned to east Texas to run a receiving and distribution center. The Southwest has also sent individuals to work on buying teams supporting incident management teams' procurement of equipment and supplies needed in support of emergency relief efforts. Under the Incident Command System, the Forest Service's Southwestern Regional Fire and Aviation Management Director Tom Zimmerman is a qualified area commander. Zimmerman's Area Command Team is currently assigned to Baton Rouge, LA, overseeing the efforts of 12 incident management teams in Louisiana and Arkansas. His team is working directly with the Coast Guard to coordinate relief efforts.
10-14-05 Arizona : KING VALLEY (26,000 acres, 100% contained) is 38 miles NE of Yuma in Kofa National Wildlife Refuge. Mike Bland is Type 3 Incident Commander assigned along with 3 Type 2 crews, 1 helicopter, 6 engines, 9 overhead, 90 total personnel. Crews are mopping up hot spots.
TANK (121 acres) is a lightning-caused fire in Kaibab National Forest 14 miles southeast of Williams. The fire started near the top of Round Mountain and is being managed as "wildland fire use." The area is posted with "Managed Fire" signs and is still open to visitors. Round Mountain Lookout has been secured. Holly Kleindienst is incident commander assigned.

"Confinement" is the suppression strategy chosen, allowing fire managers to use terrain and fuel types to limit fire spread as they monitor fire behavior and smoke emissions from vantage points on the ground. The fire is inactive.

9-25-05 : The Southwest Area has dispatched Dan Oltrogge's Southwest Area Type I Incident Management Team to Texas to run a receiving and distribution center following HURRICANE RITA's landfall. Over 500 fire personnel are assigned to the Southeast to aid in HURRICANE KATRINA and RITA emergency relief efforts.
9-25-05 Arizona : TANK (121 acres) is a lightning-caused fire burning in Kaibab National Forest 14 miles southeast of Williams. The fire started near the top of Round Mountain and is being managed as "wildland fire use." The area is posted with "Managed Fire" signs and is still open to visitors. Round Mountain Lookout has been secured. A few stumps and logs are burning on the east and north ends of the fire. Holly Kleindienst is incident commander assigned.
9-25-05 New Mexico : PINE CANYON COMPLEX (3,918 acres, 100% contained) is 6 miles west of El Rito in Carson National Forest. Steve Mullis is Type 3 Incident Commander assigned, along with 2 Type 2 crews, 1 helicopter, 3 engines, 2 dozers, 92 total personnel.
MOUNTAIN (969 acres) is 6 miles east of Reserve in Gila National Forest. "Confinement" is the suppression strategy chosen, allowing fire managers to use terrain and fuel types to limit fire spread as they monitor fire behavior and smoke emissions from vantage points on the ground. The fire is inactive.

9-22-05 : The Southwest Area has sent 5 Type 1 crews and 20 overhead personnel to Texas for HURRICANE RITA support, 120 total personnel. The Southwest Area has 581 persons assigned to Georgia, Virginia, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Texas to aid in HURRICANE KATRINA support, including 5 Type 1 crews, 8 Type 2 / military / Department of Corrections crews, 13 camp crews, and 191 overhead personnel. The New Mexico Type 2 Incident Management Team (Bob Lineback, incident commander) is staged in Pineville, Louisiana, and a State of Arizona Type 3 team (Larry Humphrey, incident commander) is staged in Meridian, Mississippi. Both teams are working as Logistics Management Teams overseeing distribution of equipment and supplies to the area. Work ranges from debris removal to logistics distribution and support. The Central West Arizona Type 2 Incident Management Team (John Philbin, incident commander) has been assigned to oversee temporary shelter for 448 evacuees at Veterans Stadium / Arizona State Fairgrounds in Phoenix. Arizona Department of Public Safety is providing further support and is coordinating security on site.

Resources assigned: 5 Type 1 crews, 3 Type 2 crews, 3 helicopters, 7 engines, 4 dozers, 1 water tender, 112 overhead, 2 camp crews, 312 total personnel.

9-21-05 New Mexico : PINE CANYON COMPLEX (3,297 acres, 50% contained) is 6 miles west of El Rito. The fire is human-caused and under investigation. The mandatory evacuation order was lifted yesterday afternoon. Residents are returning to their homes in the upper El Rito Canyon. Jeff Whitney's Southwest Area Type 1 Team is managing the incident. Resources assigned: 4 Type 1 crews, 3 Type 2 crews, 1 helicopter, 28 engines, 5 dozers, 127 overhead, 1 camp crew, 355 total personnel.

9-19-05 New Mexico : PINE CANYON COMPLEX (2,000 acres, 0% contained) was reported Saturday night and is burning 6 miles W of El Rito. The fire is human-caused and under investigation. A mandatory evacuation was ordered for homes along Forest Roads 110 and 559 with evacuees being sheltered at the County Rural Events Center near the interesection of Highways 554 and 84. Lance Elmore is Type 3 Incident Commander assigned and will transfer command to Jeff Whitney's Southwest Area Type 1 Team this afternoon. Resources assigned: 2 Type 1 crews, 2 Type 2 crews, 4 helicopters, 15 engines, 71 overhead, 148 total personnel.

9-07-05 Pinetop Fire Dept. would like to invite the public to an open house dedicated to All the Fallen Firefighters. This will be held at our Station 2, Sunday, September 11, 2005, from 9:00 A.M. to 4:00 P.M. A memorial service will be held at 1:00 P.M. We also will be hosting a fund raising event, money to Benefit The Valeree 153 Benefit Fund and the Gary Archibeque Memorial Park, for playground equipment at the New park in Show Low. We hope to see all of you there.

"Confinement" is the suppression strategy, using terrain and fuel types to limit fire spread in all directions. MOUNTAIN is creeping and smoldering and fire managers will monitor fire behavior and smoke emissions from vantage points on the ground. The fire is expected to back SW and head NE.

8-31-05 Arizona : CRUZ 2 (200 acres, 50% contained) is a human-caused fire burning on the Gila River Reservatiaon SW of Phoenix. No structures are threatened. The fire is burning in mesquite, salt cedar, and brush.
8-31-05 New Mexico : MOUNTAIN (396 acres) was started by lightning last week and is burning 6 miles east of Reserve in Gila National Forest. "Confinement" is the suppression strategy, using terrain and fuel types to limit fire spread in all directions. MOUNTAIN is creeping and smoldering and fire managers will monitor fire behavior and smoke emissions from vantage points on the ground. The fire is expected to back SW and head NE.

The Southwest Area has mobilized the New Mexico Type 2 Incident Management Team (Bob Lineback, Incident Commander) and an Arizona Type 3 Incident Management Team (Larry Humphrey, Incident Commander) to HURRICANE KATRINA to serve as logistics management teams. Lineback's team is staged in western Louisiana and Humphrey's team in Meridian, MIssissippi.

The fire is not expected to grow due to increased moisture predicted for the area. "Confinement" is the fire suppression strategy being used by Type 3 Incident Commander Mike Behrens. 8-23-05 Arizona : HENDERSON (800 acres) is burning 5 miles southeast of Roosevelt in Tonto National Forest. The fire is burning in grass, brush, pinon-juniper, and Sonoran Desert vegetation. Its growth was limited Monday by cloud cover and higher humidity during the morning and early afternoon. It will continue to move east and north with some spread to the west. "Confinement" is the fire suppression strategy being used by Type 3 Incident Commander Mike Behrens. Resources assigned: 2 overhead personnel.

8-10-05 Arizona : GUACAMOLE (1,600 acres, 20% contained) was started by lightning Sunday and is burning near Gila Bend, just south of the area burned recently by PAINTED ROCK FIRE. Fire activity picked up again Tuesday afternoon and GUACAMOLE blew across Poco Dinero Road, triggering traffic from sightseers. Residents have been advised of possible evacuation; however, the area received rain last night. Estimated containment is this evening.
HOPPER (720 acres, 90% contained) is NE of Kingman. It's smoldering with a few hot spots. Firefighters are mopping up.

7-7-05 New Mexico Gila National Forest is managing two wildland fire use complexes, NORTH GILA COMPLEX and BLACK RANGE COMPLEX, a total of four large fires burning outside of wilderness. The Gila is employing the "fire use" management strategy for both complexes. Fire use personnel are monitoring the fires daily. NORTH GILA COMPLEX WILDLAND FIRE USE (18,429 acres) includes FORK, which is 13 miles SE of Reserve, and JOHNSON, 16 miles northeast of Luna. FORK is showing minimal fire spread. Crews finished burnout operations in Pasture Canyon on the west side of the fire. Crews on JOHNSON continue monitoring its fire spread and mapping its progression. Minimal growth is expected. Erin Law's Gila fire use module is managing the 2 fires. Resources assigned: 6 Type 2 crews, 1 engine, 13 overhead, 81 total personnel. BLACK RANGE COMPLEX WILDLAND FIRE USE (54,348 acres) includes BULL, which is 13 miles NW of Gila Cliff Dwellings National Monument and just north of Gila Wilderness, and CONTINENTAL, which lies 36 miles west of Truth or Consequences and 1-1/2 miles north of Poverty Creek. About 40% of BULL's perimeter is burning actively, including southeast, east, northeast, and northwest. CONTINENTAL is showing minimal fire behavior due to lack of fuels. Crews will continue to check fire spread. Fire use modules are assigned to both fires, along with 3 Type 2 crews, 1 helicopter, 3 engines, 12 overhead, 53 total personnel.

7-5-05 Arizona CAVE CREEK COMPLEX is 248,310 acres and 90% contained. It is burning in Tonto and Prescott National Forests NE of Carefree. The Complex is split into two zones: North Zone managed by Dan Oltrogge's Southwest Area Type 1 Incident Management Team and South Zone whose command has been transferred from Jeff Whitney's Southwest Area Type 1 Incident Management Team to John Philbin's Central-West Arizona Type 2 Incident Management Team. North Zone: Crews continue to mop up 300' within the perimeter along with rehabilitating fireline and safety zones on other portions of the line. Oltrogge's team will transfer command of the North Zone to Philbin's team on Thursday. South Zone: Philbin's team assumed command of South Zone Tuesday. Crews continue to rehabilitate fireline and safety zones constructed, along with patrolling the fireline and checking for hot spots.
DRAGON COMPLEX WILDLAND FIRE USE (1,645 acres) is burning on the North Rim of Grand Canyon National Park and is being managed as "wildland fire use." The fire is spreading primarily to the east, southeast, and northeast. Fire's southern perimeter is the Grand Canyon. Bill Clark's Fire Use Management Team is assigned.
TWEEDY COMPLEX (39,486 acres, 100% contained) is burning on the Arizona Strip 35 miles south of St. George, Utah, in the Grand Canyon-Parshant National Monument. Type 2 Incident Commander Thomas is assigned to the Complex along with 1 Type 1 crew, 3 Type 2 crews, 3 helicopters, 8 engines, 14 water tenders, 113 overhead, 1 camp crew, 261 total personnel.
TRACKS (5,300 acres, 80% contained) is 10 miles SW of Mobile. Crews continue to patrol the fireline for hot spots and mop up within the fire's perimeter. Dennis Crawford is Type 3 Incident Commander assigned to TRACKS.
