The WALNUT COMPLEX consists of the
Wooley Bugger 2, Center, and Walnut Fires. Located in the Bootheel country of
southern New Mexico, this complex of fires has burned over 25,500 acres in
brush and grass. The fire is 35 percent contained with containment estimated
for 7/07. All three fires have burned together.
PARACHUTE ADAM, located in the
Bootheel country of southern New Mexico, is being reported at 2,100 acres. This
lightning caused fire has no estimated containment date reported at this time.
Little fire behavior being observed on the fire.
Arizona 7-03-02 RODEO/CHEDISKI
COMPLEX is now 70 percent contained at 467,584 acres. A thunderstorm
moved through the southern portion of the fire late yesterday afternoon causing
downdrafts throughout the area. With these downdrafts interior fire activity
increased, eventually causing a spot fire of 400 acres outside the southern
perimeter near the community of Cibecue. Ground forces immediately started
working to suppress the spot. Otherwise, little to no major activity occurring
on the remainder of the perimeter of the fire. Mop up and patrol is the order
for today. Crews will work upwards of 200-feet inside the perimeter seeking out
burning stumps, snags, and smoke. Although containment objectives are getting
closer each day, lots of work still remains before the RODEO/CHEDISKI COMPLEX
will be called 100 percent contained. 7-03-02 CARRIZO #1, located about 25 miles southwest of
Shiprock, AZ, on the Navajo Reservation, is 2,000 acres. The reduction in
acreage from yesterday is due to better mapping. Burning in pinyon, juniper,
ponderosa Pine, mixed conifer, and Aspen, the fire exhibited extreme fire
behavior with crowning and running yesterday afternoon. For a period of time,
suppression resources were pulled off the line until activity settle down and
it was safe to return. The fire continues to spread to the north, south, and
west. No estimate of containment at this time. New Mexico
7-03-02 SKELETON FIRE is a new fire on the Gila
National Forest. This lightning caused fire started on Sunday and initially
burned about 25 acres. During the next 24-hour period, the fire showed signs of
growing significantly. With this potential, the New Mexico Type 2 Team, lead by
Lawrence Garcia, was ordered in to oversee the fire. Located about 2 miles
south of Mogollon, NM, the fire is burning in manzanita and ponderosa Pine.
Individual tree and group torching of trees is occurring with some spotting out
ahead of the fire. Highway 159 east of Glenwood, NM is closed due to fire
operations. The fire is currently 100 acres, and 70 percent contained with
containment estimated for tomorrow. 7-03-02 The WALNUT COMPLEX consists of the Wooley Bugger 2, Center,
and Walnut Fires. Located in the Bootheel country of southern New Mexico, this
complex of fires has burned over 10,000 acres in brush and grass. Plans are to
contain each fire within the existing road and trail system. No containment
date reported at this time. 7-03-02 PARACHUTE
ADAM, located in the Bootheel country of southern New Mexico, is being
reported at 2,000 acres. This lightning caused fire has no estimated
containment date reported at this time. Plans are to contain this grass and
brush fire within the existing road and trail system.
Arizona 7-02-02 RODEO/CHEDISKI COMPLEX is now 463,830 acres. As of last
evening, the RODEO/CHEDISKI COMPLEX is 70 percent contained. Fire behavior
throughout the fire area was significantly lower yesterday than in previous
days with only some interior burning in isolated pockets of fuel and remote
area slopes. A backing fire is working it's way along the southern perimeter,
but is well within the established control lines. Crews are deep into the mop
up, patrol, and rehabilitation of the fire perimeter. Although containment
objectives are getting closer each day, lots of work still remains before the
RODEO/CHEDISKI COMPLEX will be called contained. Residents and business owners,
along the eastern and northern portion of the fire, have been allowed back into
their respective communities. A total of 423 structures have been lost during
this fire.
7-02-02 MORE CARRIZO #1, located
about 25 miles southwest of Shiprock, AZ, on the Navajo Reservation, is now
over 3,000 acres. The fire is burning in pinyon, juniper, and ponderoso Pine
exhibiting extreme fire behavior yesterday afternoon. As a result, fire
resources were pulled off the line for a period of time. The Northern Arizona
Type 2 team lead by Larry Sears has been ordered in to manage the fire.
New Mexico 7-02-02 WALNUT FIRE
has now been re-named the WALNUT COMPLEX. The WALNUT COMPLEX consists of the
Wooley Bugger 2, Center, and Walnut Fires. Located in the Bootheel country of
southern New Mexico, this complex of fires has burned over 10,580 acres in
brush and grass. No containment date reported at this time. Plans are to
contain each fire within the existing road and trail system.

Arizona 7-01-02 RODEO/CHEDISKI COMPLEX is 452,230 acres. As of last
evening, the RODEO/CHEDISKI COMPLEX is 35 percent contained. Burnout operations
along the west perimeter conducted on the evening of 6/29 have been able to
keep the fire from spreading beyond the established containment line. In
addition, burnout operations south of Forest Service Road 512 have been
successful and have allowed crews to tie-in with the containment line on the
southern portion. This is good news and essentially turns the corner on west
side of the fire. Along the eastern perimeter, containment lines continue to
hold in Cottonwood Canyon and Highway 60. After spending a number of days in
shelters throughout the area, residents along the eastern and northeastern
portion have been allowed to return to their homes and businesses. The
exception is Timber Land Estates, where evacuation orders have not been
rescinded at this time. Additional burnout operations from Grasshopper Butte
northwest to the fire perimeter, strengthening the line in the Forest Lakes
area, mop up, patrol, and rehabilitation of suppression lines are planned for
today. The fire is not expected to spread today, but smoke from isolated
pockets and remote slope locations well within the perimeter will be visible
throughout the day.
