Fire Fund 2002
We, private landowners, cannot find seen to plant the
burned areas with. Several are facing hillsides that need the seen now or they
will face erosion. I have been to every organization represented here. Some of
the organizations I've checked with are: Agriculture Dept - They can't help
private landowners until a bill passes that is in Congress now. Forestry - They
can't sell to private landowners. They did give me the list of the seed makeup
they are using and a list of private seed companies to possibly order from.
Local Garden supply - they are hurting due to lack of business during
evacuation and can't afford to order and don't know what to order. List of
Vendors given by Forestry - I've called several and they are all "going to get
back to me" - nothing yet The only possibility is Western Feet in Taylor and
they don't have the mix the Forestry is using but they have some of the mix and
I'm going there in the morning. Not enough for us all. Possibly someone
somewhere can get some seen here to Overgaard and sell it at a reasonable price
to private landowners. Any publicity you can give this need will be greatly
appreciated. The mix the Black Mesa Ranger District's (BAER) Team (Burned Area
Emergency Rehabilitation) Team is using is as follows: Annual Rye 30% Cereal
Barley 10% Slender Wheat 30% Mountain Brome 30% This is to be applied at 25-30
lbs/acre. Slender Wheat and Mountain Brome are perennial. The others are
annuals that will die out after a year or two. Straw may be used to provide a
protective cover to reduce erosion, increase water infiltration, and in
revegetation. Buy certified weed - Free straw. The problem is finding the above
for sale to private landowners! For More information or to help contact
