07 - 1 - 07 ARIZONA CHITTY FIRE (Apache-Sitgreaves National Forests) The Chitty Fire is on the Clifton Ranger District of the Apache-Sitgreaves National Forests; the fire is burning at the top of Chitty Canyon, west of Highway 191 and Blue Vista Overlook. Forest Road 54 at the top of the Mogollon Rim is being used as a fireline. Estimated distance from Alpine, AZ to the fire is about 27 miles to the south. STARTED: June 30, 2007, at 1630 hrs. CAUSE: Lightning CONTAINMENT: 0% ACRES: Approximately 750 acres; acreage burned includes the “burn-out” operation conducted last night. FUELS: Burning in ponderosa pine, pinyon pine, juniper and grass on a southwest aspect which is receiving winds that tend to blow the fire uphill and to the east. SUMMARY: The fire is climbing the steep slope of the Mogollon Rim so fire managers are using fuelbreaks previously established so as to minimize the risk to crews. It is likely that the burned acreage will increase due to the tendency of the fire to climb to the top of the Rim and then to burn laterally to the east. RESOURCES: There are approximately 140 personnel committed to the fire today including 5 Hot Shot crews, 4 engines and crews, a helicopter, and miscellaneous support staff. Air tankers are available to knock down flare-ups, as needed. CLOSURES: Forest Road 54 and Blue Vista are closed; Highway 191 is open but travel is discouraged since the road could be closed at any time and visibility is poor due to heavy smoke.
