The Fire, a lightning caused fire, started on the Fort Apache Indian Reservation around 1pm on 7-13-03. |

The Fire is contained , total 24,250 Acres burned , 2 lives lost , no homes destroyed. July 25 The fire is now 90% contained. There has been no recorded change in fire behavior since 7/21. Minimal fire spread is expected. A Type III Team is now in place. For information, call (928)-338-5325. The area has had rain and is expectect to receive more this week. July 23 The Fire is reported as 24,250 acres Containment: 90% contained. No estimate of containment reported. Minimal fire behavior with isolated creeping and consumption of heavy fuels occurred yesterday. A successful burnout strengthened critical containment lines and filled in most of the unburned area between containment lines and the main fire. The fire received 3/4 of an inch of precipitation after the burnout. Minimal fire spread is expected. Command of the fire was transitioned to a Type 3 organization yesterday. July 22. The Fire is reported as 24,000 acres Containment: 75% contained. Our area received 1/2 inch of rain yesterday. Fire behavior was relatively inactive yesterday morning. As fuels began drying out, some ground fire was observed later in the day. Additional burnout operations conducted on the northwest corner. Actions planned for today include continued burnout as conditions permit, mop-up, patrol, and transition to Type 3 management. Fire size will increase as burnout operations continue. The area is expecting more rain today. July 21. 8:00 AM The Fire is reported as 22,550 acres Containment: 65% Burnout operations conducted yesterday along the north/northeast portion went well. Isolated group torching and short range spotting continue to be observed. The area is expecting more rain today. July 18. 5:00 PM Rain has fallen in most of our area today, the fire currently does not threaten Pinetop-Lakeside or Hon Dah , Pinetop has had less than 1/8 inch but reports from the fire area sound like they have had much more. 8:00 AM The Fire has grown to 20,128 acres 20% contained. The fire seemed to grow yesterday to the West, not much activity North toward Pinetop. The fire is still reported 8 miles from Pinetop, 2 miles from Little Round Top Mountain. Most areas received little or no rain yesterday. Evacuees from Whiteriver are returning to their homes today. Burnout along portions of the southwest flank has gone well. Movement of the fire to the northwest has made it necessary to begin burnout from the R11 road northwest to Big Canyon, and along the R11 road to the east. Planned actions for today include continuation of burnout operations in the north. The Native American Festival in Pinetop-Lakeside is still planned for this weekend & All Fire Fighting & Emergency Personnel will be admitted FREE ! Thanks to our Fire Fighters, Local, State, and Country, again ! We are not out of completely out of danger, The fire is still growing and everyone is still working as hard as they can to make sure we have homes and businesses. They have slowed this fire , they will stop this fire as the did with the Rodeo fire , again they have saved our communities. 17. 8:30 PM From the press conference, the fire is over 21,000 acres, and is 20% contained, they are planning to do more burn-out operations tonight, evacuees may start returning to their homes around 8:00 AM. tomorrow morning. 5:30 PM Just started raining in Pinetop-Lakeside!! More rain expected tonight. 2:30 PM The Fire has not advanced today toward the North, other reports have been good. 40% chance of showers this evening and tonight. Whiteriver residence are expected to be able to return tomorrow. 9:00 AM: The fire has grown to over 17,000 acres, it is 15% contained. The fire fighters have built a fire line around the perimeter of the fire. There was little or no movement to the north towards the Pinetop-Lakeside, McNary area. Resources: Type 1 Management (Humphrey, IC). 5 Type 1 crews, 30 Type 2 crews, 5 helicopters, 45 engines, 15 dozers, 22 water tenders. Total 1,143 personnel. An additional Type One Incident Management Team from Alaska has arrived and is standing by in the Show Low, Pinetop Lakeside area July 16, 2003 10:00 PM The fire is estimated at 17,700 acres, & still only 10% contained. The fire is only 1/3 of a mile from White River, no homes have been destroyed yet. Costs estimated at over $500,000 at this time. No serious injures. 7:30 PM No changes in the fire, no plumes at this time, a smoke advisory is in effect, another news conference will be held at 8:30 PM... More information then. It is reported that a small herd of elk have moved into Show Low. 5:00 PM The fire is over 16,000 acres, The fire is still 2 miles from the Little Round Top MT. Trigger Point, the 25,000 ft. plume has not yet collapsed, Please limit cell phone and water usage. An estimated 1800 people slept in shelters last night. The evacuated communities are not in danger at the moment. 8:00 AM The Kinishba fire is 12,600 acres, 10% contained. Over 1,000 fire fighters will be in the area by morning. An additional Type One Incident Management Team from Alaska has been ordered and will standby in the Show Low and Pinetop Lakeside area. as many as 1,200 evacuees in area shelters. Currently, 700 homes are potentially threatened. The fire is currently two air miles from the trigger point. Resources: Type 1 Management (Humphrey, IC) 5 Type 1 crews, 30 Type 2 crews, 4 helicopters, 18 engines, 14 dozers, 11 water tenders. July 15 6:30 PM Some small fires where started by lightning in the area and are being addressed. The trigger point has been re-set to Little Round Top, for the Hon-Dah, Pinetop, Lakeside Area. 3:00 PM Fire is estimated to be 9,800 acres. Smoke is now heading South, winds in Pinetop are heading West, no smoke is seen in Lakeside at this time. A large plume is seen above the fire area. Surrounding areas are receiving some rain and expecting more rain this week. Trigger point for possible evacuation of Pinetop is estimated to be 3.5 miles from fire, 6 miles south of Pinetop. 600 to 800 fire personal are on site. 12:30 PM Smoke was visible within Pinetop-Lakeside, Winds are currently North - North East 10 to 15 M.P.H. 11:00 AM The fire had reached Whiteriver , 1/4 mile from Hwy 73. Trigger point for Pinetop has been been adjusted to Little Roundup Rd, est 3 to 4 miles from current fire. 8:00 AM The fire had Grown to 5,800 Acres, 0% containment 500 Fire Fighters currently are on site. The trigger point for possible evacuation of Pinetop-Lakeside is Roundtop Rd, 2 to 4 miles from current reported fire. There will be another news conference today at 11:00 AM. The fire is expected to continue to grow as a result of plume domination and thunderstorm activity. 30% chance of showers in area today. Updates will follow. July 14 8:30 PM: The fire is estimated at 5,800 acres. Two Type II Teams expected to arrive tonight, the fire is 0% contained. The Red Cross has set up an evacuation center at Snowflake Jr. High School. The public phone #'s for information are... 368-5500 & 367-2002. Please limit water & cell phone use in the Emergency Area. 7:30 PM: A news conference will be held tonight at 8:30 - Update will follow. 6:30 PM: Whiteriver evacuees directed to Cedar Creek Elementary, T. Roosevelt HS, Fort Apache and other schools. Up to 5000 people have been evacuated so far. Trigger point has been moved from Var Springs to Roundtop Road. Fire is 4-5 miles from trigger point. 3:30 PM: Whiteriver has been ordered to evacuate, the fire and wind seems to be pushing the fire East, not as much North as predicted. 700 personnel on the fire. Type 1 Fire Management Team has been ordered and is expected to assume control of the fire tonight. 2:00 PM: Navajo County Sheriff asking people in Pinetop, Lakeside, Hon Dah, McNary to be prepared to evacuate with 4 - 6 hour notice. 1:15 PM: The fire has crossed R16, Cradleboard and Jurrasic Park have been ordered to evacuate. 11:00 AM: Two Trigger Points are set for possible evacuation, Pinetop-Lakeside, Wagon Wheel trigger point is set at Flatridge canyon 2 miles from current fire reports, Whiteriver trigger point is R16.
