Virus - Worms - Spyware are and should be major concerns for all users of the Internet. New virus are being found almost daily that may attack your computer and cause trouble with your system - Internet connections or programs. It is not suggested any more you maintain a current anti-virus software package , it is required if you do not want to be infected or concerned !
Viruses most commonly spread via e-mail , this can be monitored, this will prevent most virus attachments from being delivered, as well as you using your e-mail with caution not to open any attachment unless you know what it is will help prevent infection. But the story changes now viruses such as the sasser spread quickly and have nothing to do with e-mail, also a different type of infection is referred to as spy-ware , this seems to be most commonly spread via web sites that add cookies and or add or adjust files on your system that may and often cause changes with your system and or web browser ex: changing start page , causing pop-ups , trouble searching , tracking your activities, to name just a few... Spyware can be found on most system that do not have protection !

We will do what we can to stop e-mail viruses and help protect your system , you must also follow 3 simple rules to help prevent these threats.

1. Keep anti-virus software on your system. Do not do updates weekly , schedule updates to be done automatically. Look at Nortons Latest Virus Threats and consider if your virus updates were done 1 week ago how may new viruses that you are not protected against. Also viruses spread before they are known and can be stopped by the anti-virus software you are running, of course that is why they have updates. By keeping your Anti-Virus up to date you will also help prevent viruses from spreading. You might also try to run a free copy of AVG Antivirus , it is finding some concerns that Norton Anti-Virus is not.

2. Keep your Windows Operating system up to date: Microsoft has free updates for all of there operating systems. Critical updates as well are required to help protect yourself against virus threats. As the sasser worm that hit the news early May and many other threats you don't hear about, Microsoft can stop the spread of the sasser and other viruses and help protect your system from being infected or re-infected. To update Microsoft when your using Internet Explorer click tools , windows updates ,, or click here.

3. Run Spy-ware software on your system: If you spend a lot of time surfing the net run this software weekly, one here the staff uses is free called Spy-Bot. or you might try Ad-ware and A2 Squared.

The Rim Internet / White Mountains Online cares enough to run virus checks for all of your incoming and outgoing e-mail.

Most viruses are spread via e-mail attachments, in the form of program files with the extension of zip - com - exe - scr and pif files. Most e-mail users who send legitimate attachments send pictures with the attached file being of .jpg , bmp or gif. or documents attached as .doc or .txt , theses type of files are data files, most e-mail users never send program attachments only data files so this new filter should not affect your service.

If I told you that " you were sent a virus"
The Anti-Virus software on our mail server found an e-mail sent to you that did not meet all the requirements of a valid email and or this email had an attachment that the code was recognized as being of concern. If you were told you were sent a virus , this also means that it was caught and we did not deliver this email or attachment to you. We also sent a copy of this notification to the sender of this e-mail message as well as their postmaster. There is no required actions you need to take.

What to do if I tell you, "you have sent a virus"
This has to be taken care of , you can generally remove a virus yourself with one of many free anti-virus software packages on the market. Check the bottom of this page for free anti-virus software you can download from the Internet. You can also bring in your system to us or a good computer repair store for system diagnostic. We charge $49.00 for Norton Anti-Virus , and $35 if you want us to install - update - and check your system. If you do not take care of a reported virus you will be jeopardizing information on your system as well as everyone in your address book may receive this virus even without you sending mail to them ( viruses can and will spread automatically). If it is reported that you have a virus take care of it before you use any e-mail software.
